Madrichim

The Hebrew word madrich means “leader” or “counselor.” It is derived from the word derech, which means “path” or “way.” At University Synagogue, our post b’nei mitzvah students have the opportunity to learn about leadership as they guide younger students along their Jewish educational path. Madrichim at University Synagogue can work with specific grades, specialists, or in the Education Office. In addition to “classroom time,” Madrichim will have an orientation and meetings throughout the year to reflect on their work experiences, and learn Jewish lessons of leadership.

Tichon

In Hebrew, Tichon means “high school.” What a perfect match for the Monday night post-b’nei mitzvah program! Tichon is a place for students to gather together for a meal, and then choose their own learning path from a list of innovative classes. This year Tichon offered new courses such as: American Jewish History through Music, In-Depth Torah Study, and Looks, Love, & Life: a Guide for Teenagers on Making Jewish Decisions about their Bodies and Relationships. In addition we are proud to have Richard Weintraub on our staff. Richard, whose tenure at University is longer than 30 years, has been teaching a special course for post-Confirmation students that creates a safe space as students explore tough personal issues and interpersonal communication.

Youth Groups

Our high school youth group, UNITY (UNIversity Temple Youth), is a member of the National Federation of Temple Youth, the Reform movement’s national youth group. Led by a student board under the guidance of our Rabbinic Intern Joel Thal Simonds, UNITY runs a variety of programs throughout the year, and participates in regional NFTY events where student leaders have the opportunity to meet other Jewish teens in the Southern California region.
