Being commanded to love seems like a crazy thing! How can one respond to a commandment to feel a certain way? The words in v’ahavta tell us that we are commanded to love God. Lucky for us, that statement is followed by a list of actions that include teaching our children, and being mindful of mitzvot, and doing them. How can we be mindful of mitzvot? Our blessing practice teaches us to take a moment before we engage in action to focus in on why we are doing a certain thing - and to elevate it. Wisdom Wednesday - Rabbi Barry Lutz
One of the great joys and privileges of being a rabbi is welcoming an individual into the community who has made the very personal choice to become a member of the Jewish community. It is always a source of enlightenment and blessing to hear one who has made this choice explain why they have done so. Why did they feel compelled to link their life’s journey with that of the Jewish people? Very often, it is a path that they have been on for some time. Their choice is an answer to a voice that has been calling out to them for many years. Of course, were we to be honest with ourselves we would recognize that these days, we are all “Jews by Choice”. Are you Jewish as a circumstance of your birth? How would you answer the question asked of those who are choosing Judaism for themselves? Why have you chosen Judaism?
