Our UniSyn Film Society is in its third year, and we now enjoy even more robust discussions of meaningful films for 90 minutes on Zoom, starting at 7:30 pm two or three times a month. We stream the films on our own time the week or two before the discussion.
We first discuss our reactions and then go into the cultural and historical importance of the week's film as it relates to Jewish values. It's a mixed crowd of about 24 people and always fascinating.
Recent films that have been extremely successful include: Marshall, starring Chadwick Boseman and Josh Gad The Salt of The Earth, a documentary on Sebastiao Salgado, social photographer The Song Of Names, starring David Roth and Clive Owen, a drama about Jewish identity Everything Is Illuminated, directed by Liev Schreiber based on Jonathan Safran Foer's book Corpus Christi, a very Jewish film about a Christian and Polish convict doing the right thing
Upcoming films include the one-woman show What The Constitution Means to Me, The Glorias a dramatic portrait of Gloria Steinem, and Foxtrot, a profound Israeli drama about a family with a son in the IDF. We will also discuss the 12 episodes of the series Unchained about a divorce court rabbi in Israel.
