Film Society | "Unchained"

Youssef is an Israeli, orthodox Sephardic Rabbi…and he is also a kind of private detective and advocate for women seeking divorce in the religious court from husbands who refuse to grant them a “gett” (divorce).

His methods can be dubious, but Yossef is effective and respected by the court. While working with emotionally needy women, he remains faithful to his wife. After four years of marriage, Hannah is still childless. In this community, that alone is grounds for a divorce.

Yossef and Hannah’s marriage becomes central as they struggle with reconciling their genuine love with the pressures of their families and their community.
They soon find surprise themselves as they struggle with the even more challenging issues of faith and belief.
