UniSyn Sisterhood
UniSyn Sisterhood
University Synagogue welcomes all women of our synagogue community to join our sisterhood. Our sisterhood is a vibrant and active group that reflects the diversity of University Synagogue – with members of varied backgrounds, ages, and interests.
Whether you would simply like to get to know some of the other women in the congregation, or would just like to get more involved – there is a place for you in sisterhood. However you choose to participate, please know that a warm and caring group of women waits for you. We meet regularly and often. We celebrate the Jewish holidays; watch movies, eat, drink and learn together. We have numerous activity groups which include day trips, various classes, movie groups, book groups, mahjongg groups and a variety of dining groups with brunches, lunches or dinners. We have both daytime and evening groups.
We raise funds to help groups at our synagogue, our community, in Israel, and those in need around the world. For our congregation, sisterhood purchases and presents gifts for our bar and bat mitzvahs, underwrites Red Cross training for staff, maintains a scholarship program for the “March of the Living” and supports special projects for the Religious School, Early Childhood Learning Center and the High Holy Days.
For the worldwide community, we donate funds to many worthwhile causes which have included World Union for Progressive Judaism, Jewish Braille Institute, Jewish World Watch for Sudan Relief, Israel, disaster relief, JWB Jewish Chaplains Council, New Directions, and The David Project. Through sisterhood, we enhance the quality and ideals of contemporary Jewish living to ensure the future of progressive Judaism.
As a member of sisterhood, you are a member of Women of Reform Judaism (WRJ). Established in 1913, WRJ now represents more than 75,000 women in nearly 550 women’s groups in North America and around the world. A portion of your dues is contributed to WRJ. Through the WRJ, we serve Jewish and humanitarian causes worldwide and advocate for pressing social policy concerns including civil rights, women’s issues, public education, health care and social welfare. WRJ’s involvement is grounded in our identity as Jewish women committed to Jewish values.
Even if you cannot actively participate, your membership will help support our many important programs and projects. Whether you are joining us for the first time or renewing your membership, we appreciate your support. Please take a look at our calendar, we are planning a fantastic year of events and hope you can join us.
